FEMA Corps Pine 6 team reaches out, helps animal shelter

Corps member Alohi gets to know Piper, a hound mix. By: Cameron McMahon FEMA Corps team Pine 6 recently helped out at Wayside Waifs, a non-kill animal shelter located in Kansas City, Missouri. The team helped by walking dogs, cleaning living areas, and socializing with both cats and dogs. Corps members served for the entire Veteran’s Day week, heading over to the shelter after their days of work at the FEMA region VII offices in the city.

            The Vinton Garden Club member of National Garden Clubs, Inc.,  Central Region and District II held their monthly meeting  December 2, 2013 at  Vinton Family Restaurant for lunch with Susie Hansen as hostess.   After the meeting members went to Lutheran Home for the meeting and therapy with the residents.

Benton Scholarship Foundation sets annual fundraising goal

The Benton Scholarship Foundation (BSF) has set a campaign goal of $55,000 for the 2013-2014. This follows another successful year of fundraising that included several new permanent scholarships being created.     “Every year the number of permanent scholarships presented increases thanks to the generosity of the individuals and families who have close ties to the Benton Community School District,” said Cristina Hurley, BSF President.

VS FFA members receive Greenhand, Chapter Degrees at annual BBQ

  On Thursday November 14, 2013 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter held its annual Pork BBQ night. This night is a night for members, family, and friends to come and see what our chapter has been doing this school year, as well as see the members receive their Greenhand and Chapter degrees. Our night started out in the lunch room for the meal, and then proceeded to the auditorium.

VS alum Claire Andreesen describes freshmen year in ISU Marching Band

Claire Andreesen said her first season with ISU band was challenging and 'most incredible.' Ministry follows career as cop for Rev. Gaston of Harvest Christian Fellowship

Rev. Bob and Carol Gaston For the new pastor at Harvest Christian Fellowship, the ministry is a second career. Bob Gaston retired from the Waverly Police Department as assistant chief in 2003. He had long been involved in the Salvation Army and as an assistant pastor. After finishing his law enforcement career he returned to school for his master’s degree.

Sammy We would like to thank everyone that came out to our Santa Paws event on Sunday to get their pictures taken with Santa! We always enjoying seeing our supporters and meeting new, friendly faces.   We had a great turnout on Sunday and hope to do the same at our next session! So please, mark your calendars for Saturday, December 7 and stop in to get your picture with Santa Paws! Santa will be on-site from noon-4 and ready to hear what's on your list!   Both 2 and 4 legged kids are welcome.

Thanksgiving Coloring Contest winners ride with Santa

VPRD Thanksgiving Coloring Contest winners pose with Santa before riding in the parade. The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department recently held their annual Turkey Coloring Contest for children in 3rd grade and younger. The top three winners in each division were awarded prizes, presented with their laminated contest entry and also got to ride the fire truck with Santa in the downtown parade for the Tree Lighting Ceremony. We had over 160 total entries this year and we would like to thank all of our judges and everyone who participated! The following is a list of the contest winners.
